How to become an Apprentice in Minnesota

In this state, you are not required to be an apprentice before you can take plumbing jobs.

The plumbing training programs typically last about 4 to 5 years.

During that time, you will attend both theory and practice classes.

How to Get a Journeyman License in Montana

As a journeyman, you will be able to install water fixtures without being overseen by another plumber.

To get a journeyman license, you have to take and pass an exam.

The exam covers topics such as:

  • Plumbing fundamentals and safety;
  • Materials used, and specifications;
  • Traps, interceptors, and backwater valves;
  • Plumbing fixtures, fixture fittings, and plumbing appliances;
  • Water supply systems;
  • Backflow preventions;
  • Gas appliances and piping;
  • Plumbing mathematics.

You will need to meet some requirements before you can apply for the exam.

These requirements are:

  • Be 18 years olf at the minimum
  • Send in an application form and a $170 licensing fee to the board
  • Be a registered apprentice
  • 7500 hours of hands-on experience over a period of 5 years
  • Pass the journeyman test

To be allowed to take for the exam, you have to pay a $100 fee.

You will need an exam score of at least 70% in order to get licensed.

However, if you get a score between 65% and 69%, you will be rescheduled for the exam.

The journeyman plumber exam can be taken online or in person.

If you fail the exam and need to retake it, you could be issued a temporary working permit.

The journeyman license expires every year, so you will need to renew it.

In order to renew it, you have to take 4 extra education credits.

How to Get a Master License in Montana

Montana has reciprocity agreements with Idaho, Oregon, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

The reciprocity agreement is only in place for plumbers with a journeyman license.

For the master license, you will have to go through the entire licensing process again if you come from another state.

Some other fees include an application fee of $100 and a reciprocity fee of $300.

If you plan on performing plumbing work in Montana before your license arrives, you will need a special permit.

This work permit costs $100.
