However, it is not mandatory to earn a degree, for a certificate or a diploma is enough to secure an entry-level position.

The schools offering such diplomas need approval from the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF).

The Foundation set up some minimum standards related to what an auto mechanic is supposed to learn for this position.

You should know that these programs usually have an internship component that replaces the apprenticeship.

You might want to seek a program that best suits your preferences, such as:

  • One that focuses on trucks and other large vehicles
  • Or a program focused on smaller ones

To be accepted into one of these programs, you’ll generally need at least a high school diploma or GED.

Some schools might require good knowledge of math and computer usage.

You might even find some high schools offering some training classes aimed at future auto mechanics.

Some of the schools you could consider enrolling at are:

  • Atlanta Technical College
  • Savannah Technical College
  • Georgia Northwestern Technical College
  • Wiregrass Technical College

Most of the offered programs are up to 2 years in duration.

Earning an ASE Certification

Those who want to earn a higher salary and have better career options can consider getting an ASE certification.

There are over 40 such certifications to choose from and you can earn as many as you want.

Like with any other certifications, these are earned by those who pass an exam.

However, one can’t sit through an exam without accumulating some work experience.

Usually, at least 2 years of experience are needed before being allowed to take an exam.

Some specializations require 1 year and others for up to 3 years.

There are many ASE certifications available, such as for:

  • Automobile and light truck
  • Collision repair and refinish
  • Truck equipment
  • Medium-heavy truck

If you do get certified by ASE, you’ll need to re-pass the test every 5 years.

ASE also designated a series of tests and those who pass all the tests in a series will become master auto mechanics.

Here are some examples of such series:

  • Auto Maintenance and Light Repair Certification Test (G1)
  • Automobile & Light Truck Certification Tests (A Series)
  • Collision Repair & Refinish Certification Tests (B Series)
  • Damage Analysis & Estimating Certification Test (B6)
  • Automobile Service Consultant Certification Test (C1)
  • Truck Equipment Certification Tests (E Series)
  • Alternate Fuels Certification Test (F1)
  • Transit Bus Certification Tests (H Series)
  • Advanced Engine Performance Specialist Certification Test (L1)

The air conditioning system on a vehicle is pretty complex.

Performing any type of work-related to this system requires having the EPA 609-refrigerant certification.

Working with the MVAC system also means handling a hazardous substance.

You’ll have to first get trained in how to handle the system and then pass a test to prove your knowledge.

Some programs related to this regulated refrigerant are available online, for those who need this certification.

You can take the test online and pass you need a score of at least 85%.

Most certifications and licenses have to be periodically renewed, but this one has no expiry date.

Manufacturer Certification

Manufacturer certification is good for those who want to work in a dealership or with specific car brands and models.

These diplomas are usually offered at schools that have a sponsored training program.

With such a certification you can easier land a job within the company that issued the diploma.
