Become an Apprentice
As an apprentice, you will have your license issued by the Vermont Department of Labor.
As a journeyman, your certification will be managed by the Vermont Electrical Licensing Board.
The first step in getting a journeyman license is getting the appropriate training, which requires one of the following:
- 8,000 hours of experience and completing a technical program
- 8,000 hours of practical class and 576 hours of theory in an apprenticeship program
- 12,000 hours of experience
You can also apply for an Electrical Specialist license, which requires one of the following:
- 2,000 hours of experience and completion of a technical program
- 4,000 hours of experience
Technical schools
In a trade program, you will study the following topics:
- Current Edition of the National Electric Code (NEC)
- Grounding and Wiring
- Wiring Protection Devices
- Electrical Boxes, Receptacles, and Switches
- Electrical Circuits and Systems
- Conduit Work
- Commercial Wiring
- Wiring a Residence to NEC and IRC Codes

Union Apprenticeship Programs
The Vermont Joint Apprentice and Training Committee provides apprenticeship programs.
The spots are limited, and in order to enroll, you need to:
- Register with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW)
- High school diploma/GED
- A math and science class
Take the Journeyman Exam
You can apply for this license after you submit an application form and pay a fee of $115.
You will have to show proof of 12,000 hours of experience in the trade if you didn’t complete a program.
Other requirements include:
- References from 3 electricians you worked with
- Proof of practical experience from your supervisor
The exam costs $65, has 90 questions and lasts for 4 hours.
Specialist Electrician License
Based on the specialization you chose, you need to pass one of the below exams:
- Automatic gas and oil heating
- Outdoor advertising signs
- Refrigeration and air conditioning electrical
- Appliance and motor repairs
- Electrical good pumps
- Electric farm equipment
- Commercial fire alarm
- Household fire detection and alarm
- Gas pump installation and bulk plant works
- Electric lock installation
Become a Master Electrician
To get a master electrician license, you need to be a journeyman for 2 years.
You can also get a license if you have 16,000 hours of experience together with proof of employment.
To apply, submit an application and a $150 fee to the board.
The exam you need to take lasts for 5 hours, has 105 questions and costs $65.

Maintaining the License
Once you receive your journeyman license, don’t forget to renew it once at 3 years, and take 15 extra hours of class.
