Austin is the capital of Texas, the eleventh most populated city in the country, and home to one of the primary IRS processing centers.

The TDLR issues three types of electrician licenses; each requires the passing of a state exam –

- A Journeyman or Journeyperson Electrician license in Texas requires 8,000 hours under a Master Electrician’s direct supervision.
- A Master Electrician license in Texas is issued when an applicant has held a Journeyman license for at least two years. The master electrician license requires the accumulation of 12,000 hours of supervision by a licensed Master Electrician.
According to the BLS, in May 2021, there with 52,580 electricians working in Texas.
This placed the state as having the second-highest employment level for electricians in any state.
The mean annual wage for electricians in the state of Texas is $53,080, which is about 10% below the national average.
In 2021, more than 4,300 electricians were employed in the greater Austin metropolitan area.
The Austin electricians had an annual mean salary in 2021 of $54,460.
1 Austin Career Institute
Austin Career Institute offers an Advanced Electrical Technician training program, with classes that start every month.
This certification program from Austin Career Institute requires a 6.5-month commitment to finish the program, equivalent to 677.50 contact hours.
Graduates earn a nationally-accredited certification as an advanced electrical technician.
Coursework includes safety equipment, capacitive reactance, troubleshooting, transformer, and the relationship between voltage and various circuits.

2 Austin Electrical Training Alliance
Austin Electrical Training Alliance (AUstn ETA) was established in 1945.
The Austin-based training alliance offers a five-year apprenticeship training program leading to a Journeyman Inside Wireman Electrician certification.
This program is sponsored by the IBEW Local 520 and NECA’s Central Texas Chapter.
The curriculum for this program includes codes, practices, DC theory, transformers, codeology, AC theory, hazardous locations, blueprints, and electrical safety-related work practices.

3 Southern Careers Institute
Southern Careers Institute offers medical, business, and technical training programs from its multiple campuses.
SCI’s state-approved electrician vocational training program allows graduates to apply the course hours to state licensing requirements.
This electrical technician program from Southern Careers Institute prepares students for entry-level jobs in the residential and commercial electrical and construction industries.

4 The Blue-Collar Recruiter and Virtual Trade School
The Blue-Collar Recruiter and Virtual Trade School operates entirely online and offers a unique electrician training program in Austin.
The Virtual Trade School offers recruiting options, including interviewing techniques and resume building.
Students enrolled in this online electrician vocational program will receive access to a specific curriculum, test preparations, as well as simulated technical training options, and employer services.

5 The Central Texas Chapter of the Independent Electrical Contractors
The Central Texas Chapter of the Independent Electrical Contractors offers one of the best electrician training programs in and around Austin.
This four-year apprentice program combines formal technical classroom instruction and on-the-job training, which prepares graduates for a rewarding career as a residential or commercial electrician.
Sample coursework for this program includes electrical symbols and outlets, an introduction to electricity, generators, DC and AC theory, electrical blueprints, and grounding.
