Training and Education in North Carolina

To start working as a home health aide in this state, you need to have a nurse certification.

You are required to finish 75 total hours of CNA training in an accredited facility.

If you don’t have a license, you can’t get hired by a home health agency that is certified by Medicare.

Out of a total of 75 hours, you must take 16 practice hours.

The remaining hours will be class-based.

In order to maintain your certification, you need to take 16 extra hours of training each year.

In class, you will be learning about:

  • Processes of development and aging
  • Personal care services
  • Infection control
  • Nutrition
  • Maintaining the least restrictive environment
  • Body mechanics
  • Assistive technology

Before you can enroll in a training program, you need to fulfill some requirements.

These requirements are:

  • Be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or a GED
  • Pass a tuberculosis exam
  • Pass a background check
  • Be able to read and write
  • Be smart and show interest in learning
  • Not have any addictions

You can take additional training for more job opportunities as well.

Some of these include CPR training or anatomy class.

Another option is to complete a longer, associate’s degree, or bachelor’s degree program.

If you only want to finish a simple program, this will only take a few weeks.
